It was a recurring dream. He was walking down a street. It was night...late at night. He was going to get an ice cream cone and he remembered it was specifically an orange sherbet vanilla swirl. This was odd since he usually craved chocolate. He could see the ice cream parlor in the distance, and it looked like it was glowing. He walked pass a dark building on his left. He had never seen this building before.
Sitting in the front yard, was a bear. Strangely, the bear felt familiar, and not only that, he felt excitement to see the bear. It was like a reunion and he felt joy as he ran up to the bear. "How have you been?! Are the tomatoes growing well?" Now this was a very odd thing to say. But this is what he always said when he saw the bear. The bear would open its mouth, only to have its answer drowned out by a passing Cadillac. He'd wake at this point. Always at this point. And for the next few days, although the sight of a tomato cheered him, he'd feel his life was profoundly incomplete.
Painting Process
That's a '59 Cadillac El Dorado or at least my interpretation of one. I painted it a lot of different colors before I settled on dark blue. This painting is a lot of images put together. It is one of the only ones where the bear is sitting down but I was drawn to the feeling of the bear comfortably parking itself there in front of the building.
I liked the idea of an ice cream parlor and found an image that I liked. I altered the image quite a lot though. I mostly liked the ice cream cone on top. It look a while before I came up with a name that seemed suitable. I asked my daughter what ice cream was in french, and she said La Glace. It was perfect.
This was my first night sky and I've now been drawn to night time paintings with a full moon. This particular sky needed something more and I thought of an eagle. The image I was using as a reference was an eagle flying against the blue sky. I first painted the eagle against the night sky but the colors blended in too much and the eagle was hardly noticeable, so I copied the bright blue color on the reference image and it worked as a spot of blue opening up in the dark sky. The eagle is my favorite part of this painting.
